About Mourne Mountains Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

The Mourne Mountains Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) covers approximately 122 square kilometers in County Down, Northern Ireland. Characterized by its granite massif, the Mournes feature the highest peaks in Northern Ireland, including Slieve Donard at 850 meters (2,789 feet). The landscape is defined by sweeping moorlands, clear lakes, forested areas, and steep granite tors. Historically, the region has a rich industrial heritage linked to granite quarrying and water supply, with the Silent Valley and Ben Crom reservoirs providing water to much of Belfast and surrounding areas. Ecologically, the Mournes support a range of habitats with heather moorlands, native oak woodlands, and upland bogs, providing a home for diverse bird species such as peregrine falcons and hen harriers. Outdoor recreation is a major draw, with well-maintained trails for hiking, mountain biking, and climbing. Popular routes ascend peaks like Slieve Donard, Slieve Binnian, and Slieve Commedagh, offering panoramic views of the Irish Sea and the surrounding countryside. The area also appeals to anglers, campers, and photographers. The Mournes have long inspired cultural works and remain a vital natural refuge recognized for its protection and sustainable tourism efforts.
